What is reuse@leeds?
Reuse@leeds is an online resource for University of Leeds staff members to redistribute furniture,
stationery and equipment across the campus.
A development of an earlier simple email distribution system, reuse@leeds also incorporates a database that
is able to accurately record all membership details and transactions as well as providing accurate, detailed
reports. The new site also automatically updates a running carbon and financial total.
The University of Leeds is the second largest in the UK, with 32,800 students and 8,000 staff. In March 2009
a report was commissioned to investigate the current situation regarding furniture from procurement through to
disposal. Initial findings revealed that both financial and carbon savings could be achieved through a more
effective system of furniture management and in July 2009 a furniture reuse network was launched.
The furniture reuse network continued to grow throughout 2010 to a membership of over 270 members and the
financial and carbon savings demonstrated over this period provided evidence for further investment into a
better, more efficient online system.
Between July 2009 and January 2011, the online reuse network has saved the University over £270k of
furniture. This value was based on the cheapest cost of replacement from our approved suppliers and also took
into account the removal cost in comparison to the disposal costs.
Also, through working closely with our furniture suppliers, we were able to calculate the carbon
savings, which amounted to over 70 tonnes in this time.
